Welcome to Fane of The Cosmos.
For those who don’t
know the meaning of Fane it is derived from the
latin word fanum meaning a place dedicated to
some deity, a sanctuary, or a place consecrated
to religion; a church. It is also a root word
for fanatic….haha.
We should probably start with a history of
Kootenay Coop Radio…I will do it from my view as
there were so many people involved who saw
different angles of the evolution that it would
be impossible to condense it all.
The first broadcast of the radio station was
from a local bar called “Club Utopia”, the sound
booth for gigs was the soundboard… and the
studio was the bar dance floor. It ran for 30
days and everyone had a great time.
I came on board when the Kootenay Coop Radio was
housed in the old Jam Factory which is now the
Chinese Medical School. It had a deck along the
entrance that we would take fresh air breaks on.
The overall mood of the station was relaxed and
fun, frequently people appeared on each others
shows. We were learning how to make a radio
station. I believe that in these days there
wasn’t even a full bill, which is a full day of
programming.
In
Reverend Damuzi's words:
In 2000, when I first started Church of the
Universe Hour, which would later become Fane of
the Cosmos, I had no idea that it would run for
so long, or attract such a wide following. In
those days Kootenay Coop Radio, which still
hosts Fane, was just starting to offer a full
schedule of programs year round.
I had just moved to the Kootenays, fresh from
the challenge and excitement of co-hosting the
Cannabis Nation Radio Hour on Vancouver Coop
Radio which seemed, each week, to attract at
least one police car to directly below the
studio at pigeon park on Hastings St. Or maybe
they were just there to arrest heroin dealers.
Either way,
I railed at the system, embodied by that
ubiquitous squad car, for ordering police
to oppress the unapproved-drug using culture.
From
a small basement apartment on Nelson's Victoria
Street, that I shared with Reverend Ian Hunter,
we strategized how we might educate and harass
the citizens of Nelson with our weekly sermons
on psychedelic news, laws and new lawless uses,
as I had in Vancouver. The Church of the
Universe Hour also seemed an ideal platform for
increasing awareness around issues that I was
campaigning on in the federal election, during
which I ran for the Marijuana Party. From these
humble beginnings, sparked from the light of too
many joints, I found my way to Kootenay Coop
Radio and applied to smoke out their airwaves.
Brother
Dustin Sunflower was a welcome addition to the
show, bringing excellent entheobotanical
knowledge in a weekly segment that began soon
after the show first hit the air. Ian Hunter and
I suspected he was only there for the glory and
the
girls, but since he was such a great radio
personality, we decided he should become a
permanent co-host. Eventually the show was
renamed "Fane of the Cosmos", and Brother
Sunflower became the show's nearly exclusive
host. Thanks to him, the dream that Ian Hunter
and I had so long ago is still alive.
We also did a small stint on POT TV with a few
episodes to the bill, check them out at:

In
Dustin Sunflower's words:
When I started appearing on the show with
Reverand Damuzi and Ian Hunter it was like being
a child in amongst giants. My timid voice would
either agree or add something close to what they
were talking about. They were already able to
vocalize their inherent genius while I was a
still a cricket in the grass…or high on
grass…whichever.
Over time I started a segment during the show
called “Plant Allies” and discussed an
entheogenic plant each week. It was the first
foray into having my own voice.
Then two critical things happened that changed
the course of the show, the death of High Priest
of Pot …Ian Hunter and the retirement of
Reverand Damuzi from a 10 year Senior Editorship
of the now famous Cannabis Culture Magazine.
These two events thrust me into the sole hosting
of the show.

I have now been on and hosting the show for
roughly 8 years. There have been many changes
over the years. After 3 changes of studio
locations, Kootenay Coop Radio now has a house
which we own in the heart of Nelson and seem
poised to make history in radio. The city of
Nelson is changing rapidly; with gentrification
due to high housing prices and domination of
tourism, we can only hope that the radio station
remains a radical part of the community.
Fane has also had a number of contributors to
the show:
Alan
has been a source of great music and has
appeared a number of times on the show.
Paul
Defelice has been a valuable resource for his
contribution of interesting stories for the
show.
